SWJTU was founded in 1896 in Shanhaiguan.  In 1989, it was moved to Chengdu.  Currently the university has 18 schools, offers 95 master degrees and 61 undergraduate majors.  SWJTU has established good collaborative relations with over 80 universities in 60 countries and states.  Over 300 long-term international students study at SWTJU from more than 20 countries.

A cosmopolitan community of friendly residents, Chengdu has something for everyone. It is the cultural and commercial center of southwest China. The People’s Republic of China is the oldest continuous major world civilization, with records dating back about 3,500 years. The PRC is the largest country in East Asia and the most populous in the world with over 1.3 billion people. China is the 3rd largest economy in the world and has become one of the fastest growing economies. The country has diverse terrain ranging from desert to mountains, coastal areas and subtropical forests.

Before going abroad, you will need to investigate the courses available at potential host institutions. OSU students studying abroad must take at least the equivalent of 12 OSU credit hours during their exchange semester. Please be sure to read the course descriptions provided by the host institution and compare them to your coursework at OSU. 

OSU students studying at Southwest Jiaotong take intensive Chinese language courses. A student that is fluent in Chinese can enroll in regular courses at SWTJU. Sometimes, special arrangements can be made for students interested in specific courses. Click here for more information on courses taught in English. 

Students participating in a reciprocal exchange program must have completed at least 45 credit hours and have a cumulative 3.0 GPA or above at the time they intend to participate.

Visa Information
Students studying for 90 days or more are required to obtain a student visa or residency permit. Please refer to the website of the embassy or consulate to obtain visa information. You are encouraged to work with Ms. Vivian Wang at Oklahoma State University for visa assistance.
