Program Description:
KayaCommunityDevelopmentEcuadoCommunity Development Internship at a Fair Trade NGO in the Amazon Rainforest

Participate in a community development internship in the Amazon and help local tea farmers develop an association to boost production of native tea, and coordinate with Fair Trade USA. The project aims to raise the profile of
this indigenous, fair trade product and to build the capacity of the farmers themselves so that they are
able to administer their business, develop their relationship with Fair Trade USA and manage the
Social Premium Fund, designed to support the community with proceeds from the cooperative.

A multi-faceted approach is being taken by the project to enable farmer participation through the
development of a farmers' association, training members in essential business skills and
facilitating development of work plans, including the management of finances.
The project aims to assist the participants with the development of quality business plans to
ensure the sustainability of the association and the Social Premium Fund. This is a fantastic
project focused on skills building and development of local skills.

Your role will vary depending on your skills and experience and the needs of the project at the
time of your placement. However, duties are likely to include:

• Coordinate administration for the association
• Attend all meetings and training sessions and take minutes
• Help to manage finances for the Social Premium Fund
• Accompany members of the association on trips to other cooperatives in Ecuador
• Facilitate training sessions in areas of expertise
• Assist in the implementation of community development projects

You will work alongside a local team, and as an intern, you will be able to learn from your
colleagues as well as sharing your own knowledge and skills in a constructive manner.
